A COMPANY IS LIKE A BICYCLE WHEEL
The experience gained during many years of working in the Dutch and international software and services industry has given us an insight into what makes a business successful. But also what the challenges were and what went wrong with the less successful ones. This has allowed us to develop a concept that we believe will help talented entrepreneurs to be successful: the spikesconcept .
The spikesconcept is based on our vision that a company can only be successful if it has all the relevant specialisms at its disposal, and can tie these together in a close-knit unit to work towards a common goal.
It is no accident that the bicycle wheel features prominently on our home page. Because the bicycle wheel can help illustrate our concept.
Like a company, a bicycle wheel consists of components that affect the sturdiness, robustness and flexibility of the whole, and which in turn affect the speed (the result) that can be attained.
The spokes of a wheel represent the different specialisms in the company, like sales, marketing and management.
The specialisms are, like the spokes, the most heavily loaded parts of the system. They determine how the forces will be applied on the road (the market). So each spoke has to be of the highest quality.
But while each individual spoke may be of exceptionally high quality, without the rim they're not effective. The rim is what we see as the cohesion between the different specialisms. The rim ensures that the spokes are connected one to another and can combine their strengths to exert a greater force on the road.
A high-quality rim is elastic enough to cushion every blow (competition, market developments, etc.) that the wheel comes up against, and rigid enough to distribute the forces over the spokes. But in some cases not all the spokes are properly connected to the rim, or the rim is not of sufficient quality. Then the wheel can no longer withstand the bumps in the road and can get dented. And with a wheel that isn't round, you can't reach top speed.
This philosophy is the underlying foundation for a business concept we have developed from more than 30 years of experience in the software and IT market: a concept to quickly establish new business initiatives and then build on success.
Our concept incorporates three spearhead areas (spikes):
- Have a clear business strategy that is realistic and understood by all.
- Leverage existing specialisms (spokes), and add to where necessary.
- Ensure that the underlying connections (rim) function optimally.
